It’s no surprise that most things change over time. Just like fashion or the interior designing of your home, you can find yourself quickly outdated if you don’t keep an eye on current trends. Your resume should not be any different, as you change, it should follow suite. Because employers are constantly looking for the next, exciting, talented employee they should hire and add to their team, it’s imperative to market yourself well. You need to let companies know what sets you apart, what makes you different and valuable. You’d be surprised, or maybe not so much, at how quickly no new ideas or projects get initiated if everyone is always having the same ideas!  For 2019, your resume, even at a quick glance, should reflect a modern and appealing format. Simply said, it should reflect YOU.

HOW TO DRESS YOUR RESUME FOR 2019:

1. Get to the Point… and Quickly!
Make sure your resume is no longer than 2 pages, regardless of years of experience. Use the intro header to sum up your years of experience. This is also a great place for a personalized intro that describes you, again, that what makes you different part. In the body of the resume make sure your information is up to date and go back no more than 10 years and/or five employers. Even if you are currently employed, it is important to list your most recent position. Remember, any reputable recruiter will ask for your permission to contact your current employer. Also, a modern resume should list achievements. You should be proud of what you’ve accomplished! This could be sales goals achieved or even OEM certifications.

2. Tailor it to the Job like a Custom Suit!
Most people work backwards on this point, but not you! You’re too smart. You’re going to make sure that you are highlighting your achievements that align with the job qualifications and requirements. You are going to display your custom skill sets and performance standards. You are going to make sure that you are using those specific keywords on your resume that match the job advertisement and, to make sure your resume lands on the top of the heap, you are including only relevant information. Basically, you are making sure that those recruiters and hiring managers can quickly identify you as a match for the role!
*Tip: If you’ve worked in multiple industries utilize the intro summary to highlight that information.

3. And Don’t Forget that Pop of Color!
Did you know that the average recruiters and hiring managers can preview anywhere from 25-500 resumes per day?! The visual aspect is almost as important as the content, as with anything really. Make sure you are putting your best foot forward. Pay close attention to structure, layout, and formatting; the goal is clean lines and pleasing aesthetics. Make your resume just as eye-catching as your personality; try a pop of color and or a headshot. Steer away from long run on paragraphs about your job duties. Keep it simple!
