We get it. The process of hunting for a new job can be exhausting and even daunting. The feeling of being rejected for a job position can be deflating. That is why our experts here at Goodword Jobs want to make sure that every step of your job search journey is not only effective, but stress free. Take it from us, its our everyday job!
Have you ever wondered why you don’t get that call back? Or perhaps you received an auto message informing you that you were not selected for the role you so desperately wanted? Yet, somehow you know you more than qualify for not only that position but possibly even for higher-level responsibility? The answer is simple, while not always apparent to the average job seeker. Most times, and especially in larger companies, the actual recruiting process is streamlined by automation.
With employers seeking ways to reduce company spend they are searching for more efficient ways for their hiring managers to source through the hundreds of resumes they receive daily. This results in companies turning to Applicant Tracking Systems with robust filtering capabilities and “A.I.” Artificial Intelligence Technology. What does this mean? It means, if your resume does not have specific keywords that are also in the job listing, usually under qualifications or responsibilities, you will get auto declined! In addition, if you do not fill out or meet the prescreening questions, you will be automatically rejected without ever receiving a call. It would seem then that your dream stops there.
So…how can you avoid this? Glad you asked!
- BE INTENTIONAL: Review the job listing and compare it to your resume. It is okay to edit your resume as you learn more about the positions you are considering if the content is true. Are you highlighting specific keywords on your resume that match the job listings content? Keep in mind the system is scanning for these specific keywords and will auto filter you out!
- BE SPECIFIC: Are you summarizing and calling out your tenure of specific skills to make it easier for the hiring manager and the system to identify your experience level? For example; “15+yrs of automotive sales experience”. Include all relevant information that may help your overall job search.
- BE CONCISE: Stay away from run on paragraphs about your job duties! Remember you are up against a robust system trying to filter you down to the one resume that matches the search criteria. Make it both easy for the system and hiring manager to read your resume. Keep it short but descriptive.
- BE THOROUGH: Answer the prescreening questions. About 75% of candidates take the time to answer the job ads prescreening questions. If you are one of the 25% that are not answering the questions, expect to be auto declined.
